Work was adapted to each plot in order to preserve the health of the grapes and bring them to maturity. Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot reacted very well to the climatic conditions of the vintage, producing colorful, fruity wines with elegant, precise tannins and a remarkable balance between sweetness and acidity. An exceptional vintage thanks to "exceptional luck"

  • Wine Style
Deep purple color. On the nose, ripe fruit aromas such as blackberry and plump cherry mingle with elegant oak (toast, smoke, vanilla) and fresh notes. On the palate, the attack is round and frank. This very dense, well-balanced wine has a fine tannic structure, with tannins that are already well coated and fine. Long finish with a fruity, aromatic return. A wine already very silky and promising.

The rainfall marked this vintage: a mild and very rainy winter, a delayed flowering, an unusual spring freshness, some moderate rains at the time of ripening… But the rather mild summer made up for part of the delay. Despite their very low yields and their natural precocity, Merlots did not provide a sufficient level of quality, hence their historically low proportion in the Brane-Cantenac blend. Conversely, thanks to the precocity of the Brane plateau, the Cabernet Sauvignon was able to achieve good quality on this great terroir.

Brane’s great success in this vintage is down to the terroir, which leads grapes to ripen early. • Weather conditions
The 2011 vintage was complicated throughout the growing cycle. In addition to all our efforts, there were two key factors in obtaining high-quality wines. The first was the plateau of Brane’s soil water reserves, thanks to which the vines did not suffer from the spring drought. The second was the use of optical sorting. Sun scald, uneven ripening within bunches and between the stocks and the poor health status of certain grapes made careful grape selection especially important. It is clear that without this tool, the wines produced would not have achieved the same quality level.

The very cold winter and exceptionally warm, sunny spring promised a generous, early vintage. However, the 2011 vintage was complicated throughout the vegetative cycle. A violent hailstorm hit the vineyards on June 4, and the drought continued until July, when it cooled off considerably, followed by rain in August. Two elements were key to obtaining quality wines: the first was the water reserve of the soils, which enabled the vines not to suffer from the spring drought, and the second was the use of optical sorting.

A mild winter and early bud break were followed by a very wet May and aggressive downy mildew, requiring relentless vineyard management. Early flowering plots enjoyed ideal weather in mid-May, but others were slowed by wetter, cooler weather. Unusually, colour change began for the Cabernets before the Merlots, mid-July. Low summer temperatures slowed this process but luckily a hot and dry September favoured ripening. Harvest conditions were excellent and new sorting systems improved harvest reception; notably ‘Viniclean’, which gets rid of dried-up skins, pips and small debris. Brane’s success in this tricky vintage came down to hard work and technical improvements.

  • Weather conditions
A mild winter, early bud-break, a very rainy May and aggressive mildew meant that the vineyard had to be managed relentlessly. Flowering was heterogeneous and veraison started earlier for the Cabernets than for the Merlots, which is unusual. The cool summer slowed the process, but fortunately the hot, dry month of September favored ripening. Harvest conditions were excellent. Brane's success in this difficult vintage is due to hard work supported by technical improvements.

The year began well with a warm spring bringing excellent budding and flowering, but a heat wave in July slightly scorched the young vines and halted the growth of the others. Rainfall at the end of the month helped restore growth, with colour change occurring at the end of July. A very cool, damp August caused concern, but ripeness tests were surprisingly positive. Favourable weather lasted until mid-September, when harvesting began in sunny conditions. Most of the harvest was brought in before the rainy period began.

  • Weather conditions
The warm spring allowed excellent budburst and flowering, but the heatwave in July slightly dried out the young vines and interrupted the growth of the others. Rain at the end of July helped to revive growth and encourage veraison. The cool, wet month of August caused some concern, but the favorable weather continued until mid-September and the harvest was able to begin under sunny skies. The majority of the harvest was already in before the rainy period began. That year, an in-depth study of 10 Cabernet Sauvignon plots by an agricultural engineer enabled us to choose the perfect harvest date for each plot.

An explosive, complex, suave and elegant bouquet of blackberry, eucalyptus, cedar, flower, and tobacco scents, certainly showing more intensity and energy than any of the last five vintages. • Weather conditions
Budding took place gradually at the end of March, followed by flowering in May, slightly earlier than usual. Good pollination and fruit setting produced fewer bunches of grapes than in 2004. Due to an expected drought, extensive green harvesting was carried out, before the grapes turned colour in mid-July, during a very dry summer. Cool nights allowed the synthesis of phenolic components. September and October were exceptional, with no rain. Everything was perfect as harvest began, with very high sugar levels, low yield, perfect sanitary conditions and glorious weather.

Garnet-red color with dark highlights. The first nose is very expressive and nuanced, with smoky, leathery notes. The second nose is complex, with balsamic (menthol notes), ripe black fruit (notably cherry) and floral notes such as lavender. The palate is full-bodied, with firm, long tannins. • Weather conditions
After a rainy, cool winter, budding took place late March. Summery weather at the end of April boosted vegetation growth, and from the outset hopes were high for a prosperous harvest. Green harvesting and leaf thinning were necessary to reduce yields. The grapes turned colour in mid-July and despite an unfavourable August, high temperatures in September ensured excellent ripening. For optimal concentration of must, we used reverse osmosis and bled the vats. The pre-fermentation macerations increased color extraction and the wooden vats enabled us to perfectly control fermentation temperatures. The quality of the wine is excellent; it is classic, dense and concentrated.

  • Weather conditions
The year began with unremarkable weather: a rainy autumn, cold winter and mild, dry spring. Then came an extremely long, hot summer interspersed with violent storms in May, June, and July. After early flowering and ‘veraison’, we began the harvest early, on September 8, in great weather conditions. Despite unusual climatic conditions, 2003 produced very high-quality wines. The Merlots showed exceptional fatness, blending in very well with the concentrated, aromatic and elegant Cabernets.

  • Weather conditions
The extremely dry winter was followed by a mild spring with little rainfall. As a result, the bud-break took place earlier than usual. June was cool, causing ‘coulure’ (flower abortion) on the Merlots and ‘millerandage’ (un-pollinated fruit) on the more advanced Cabernets Sauvignons. Yields were therefore dramatically reduced. Summer was gloomy and cold until four sunny weeks before the harvest. Grapes were brought in sound and dry, full of sugar and phenolic components. Each plot was harvested separately according to its ripeness. ‘Pigeage’ (cap punching), ‘delestage’ (emptying out the vats entirely before pumping over) as well as long periods of maceration ensured great richness of tannins.

Garnet-coloured with slight tile tints. Fresh and joyful bouquet of blackberry, raspberry, gravel and cedar scents that seem to gain intensity with aeration. These aromatics demand attention! • Weather conditions
Numerous morning frosts in April caused damage in the vineyard. In spite of quite even flowering, a little ‘coulure’ (flower abortion) occurred in the Merlot plots. July was cool and wet but August and September were beautiful, ensuring a slow ripening process despite a concerning outbreak of botrytis. Thanks to close inspection of each parcel, ripe and healthy grapes were brought in. The use of ‘pigeage’ (cap punching) and ‘delestage’ (emptying out the vats entirely before pumping over) as well as long macerations produced very rich tannins. All varietals showed high levels of sugar and phenolic components.

  • Weather conditions
After an early bud-break at the end of March, the growing season was slowed down by a cool, damp spring. Spraying was vital for combating downy mildew and other fungal diseases. July was abnormally cold and wet, though August and September were sunny and dry, ensuring good ripening of the grapes. Harvest conditions were favourable, allowing us to wait for optimal ripeness in each plot. Thanks to hot weather the quality and concentration of the grapes was far superior to previous vintages. The Merlots showed good deep colour and fatness on the palate. The Cabernets displayed outstanding tannins, balance, roundness and finesse. Paradoxically, selection remained very severe.
